Cell phones: great to have for Emergencies
A couple in our ward have done extensive research on the best cell phone plans, as we all know Verizon and At&T are taking us all to the cleaners.
The cheapest plan (just came to Nevada) is free and is available if you can prove an income < $21,000 / year. It includes a decent phone with 250 minutes / month. There are also generous international plans. This might be good for kids just starting out, people doing missionary work, retired people, etc. The program is funded by the phone industry (not the government) and comes from those little weird amounts on your telephone bill that no one can explain.
If you don't qualify for a free phone, the cheapest phones are from net10.com. They can cost as little as $5.00 / month (if you use the right plan) up to a maximum of 50,000 minutes / month for $50.00 (which is pretty good as there are only 43,200 minutes in 30 days). In all the plans, 411, texting, messaging, all fees, all taxes, etc. are all included.
All of these phones use the AT&T network. We switched and haven't found any bad areas in the local area. The customer service isn't as good as AT&T or Verizon, but they get the job done eventually.
